Osmani meets with the US Deputy Secretary of State / Focus of the talks revealed

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani spoke on Monday in Washington with US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau on a number of issues, including a law recently signed by US President Donald Trump, the security situation in the region and the postponement of the suspended strategic dialogue between the two countries, the Kosovo Presidency said.

In a National Defense Authorization Act, which was passed and signed into law by Trump last week, Kosovo and Serbia are also required to implement the agreement to normalize relations by 2023.

Osmani also expressed to him the "gratitude of the people of Kosovo" for American support for Kosovo's sovereignty and territorial integrity, for President Donald Trump's vision that dialogue be based on mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia, for support for Kosovo's membership in NATO, as well as for increasing strategic economic investments.

"Regarding relations between Kosovo and Serbia, the president expressed gratitude for the clear policy of the Trump Administration that dialogue should be based on mutual recognition and for the fact that dangerous ideas of border changes or division have been excluded. This approach, she added, is necessary in order to maintain peace and stability in our region," the statement said.

Meanwhile, Osmani and Landau also spoke about the strategic dialogue, which the US suspended earlier this year indefinitely.

The suspension came after Washington expressed concerns about the actions of the acting Government of Kosovo, mainly to extend sovereignty to the Serb-majority north without coordination with the international community.

Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has justified these actions as steps towards extending the rule of law in the north and has said that they are in accordance with the Constitution and laws of Kosovo.

Osmani described the strategic dialogue between the two countries as an "essential platform" for strengthening the bilateral partnership and advancing cooperation in areas of common interest.

This was Osman's second meeting with Landau this year, as they had met in the summer to discuss potential areas for future economic cooperation between the two countries.

She mentioned that the two countries could benefit from cooperation in the energy, information technology and defense sectors.

Osmani has also met with senior American officials throughout the year, on the sidelines of various summits, including US President Donald Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The United States has allocated over $2 billion to Kosovo since 1998. Kosovo leaders have reiterated over the years that America is Kosovo's most important partner and that its support is vital. /REL
