A draft Pentagon report has revealed that China is likely to have deployed over 100 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at its latest silo sites, aiming for rapid nuclear expansion.

The report highlights China's growing military ambitions and strategic focus on Taiwan and suggests that China is modernizing its nuclear arsenal faster than any other nuclear-armed nation.

According to the report, China's nuclear warhead stockpile was about 600 in 2024, but projections show it could exceed 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030. The Pentagon report also notes that China has no plans for arms control, even after appeals from world leaders, including US President Donald Trump.

The report comes ahead of the expiration of the New START treaty in 2025, raising concerns about a potential three-way nuclear arms race. Meanwhile, Beijing has maintained a self-defensive nuclear strategy.

The report, which highlights China's nuclear expansion and its intentions, comes months after US President Donald Trump said he had instructed the US Department of War to immediately begin testing nuclear weapons. Trump had said he made the decision because of nuclear tests by Russia and China./CNA
