Hydrogen explosion at chemical plant in Lyon/ 4 injured, building on fire

Four people were injured, three of them in critical condition, in a hydrogen explosion at the Elkem Silicones site in Saint-Fons, south of Lyon.

The explosion occurred in an experimental workshop at the silicone materials production plant, a high-threshold site classified by Seveso in France.

The explosion caused a fire in a 600-square-meter building, which was brought under control.

About 100 firefighters and 30 emergency vehicles were sent to extinguish the flames. All four of the injured were employees of Elkem Silicones. Two are in critical condition, while a third suffered serious injuries, authorities said.

Authorities activated Orsec's emergency response plan and sent FR-Alert messages to residents in Saint-Fons, Feyzin, Pierre-Benite and Venissieux, affecting over 100,000 people. A 1-kilometer security perimeter was established around the facility./CNA
