Trump: Maduro would be wise to step down

US President Donald Trump has said it would be wise for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to leave power.

He said, among other things, that the United States is likely to keep or sell the oil it has confiscated from the coast of Venezuela in recent weeks.

The US pressure campaign against Maduro includes an increased military presence in the region and dozens of military strikes that have been carried out on ships suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

At least 100 people are reported to have been killed in the attacks. Asked if the goal was to remove Maduro from power, Trump told reporters that "it could be."

"It's up to him to decide what he wants to do. I think it would be wise if he did that. But again, we'll see."

In addition to the attacks, Trump has previously announced a "blockade" of all oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.

Over the weekend, the United States Border Patrol pursued an oil tanker in international waters, the second such operation in recent days and the third in two weeks.

"Maybe we'll sell it, maybe we'll keep it," Trump said when asked what would happen to the seized oil.
