Russia continues to advance/ Ukraine loses another city

Ukrainian troops have withdrawn from the eastern city of Siversk, which is embroiled in fighting, as Russia continues its steady, albeit slow, advance.

The Ukrainian military said it withdrew to preserve the lives of our soldiers and the combat capability of the units, adding that Russian forces had an advantage in manpower.

The capture of Siversk brings Russia closer to the last remaining cities of the "fortress belt", Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, which are still in Ukrainian hands in the industrial region of Donetsk.

Earlier in the day, officials said three people, including a young child, were killed in massive overnight Russian drone and missile strikes in Ukraine.

Before the Russian invasion, Siversku had a population of about 11,000. Two weeks earlier, Russia had already reported control of the city, but Ukraine denied this claim at the time. Siversku has been virtually wiped out as a city during many months of fierce fighting.

Moscow currently controls about 75% of the Donetsk region and about 99% of neighboring Luhansk. The regions are collectively known as Donbas.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned that Ukrainian troops must withdraw from all of Donbas or Russia will occupy it, rejecting any compromise on how to end the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been under strong pressure from his US counterpart Donald Trump to cede all of Donbas to Russia during Washington-led peace negotiations.

Zelensky has so far rejected any territorial concessions and has instead demanded strong security guarantees for Ukraine in any possible solution.

Peace negotiations, which included separate meetings of US officials with their Ukrainian and Russian counterparts, continued over the weekend, but no progress was reported. According to Zelensky, the US had proposed a ceasefire for Christmas, but Russia rejected the idea. / CNA
