Gunmen kidnap 28 Muslims in central Nigeria

Gunmen have kidnapped 28 Muslims traveling to an annual Islamic event in central Plateau state of Nigeria. The hostages, including women and children, were ambushed on their bus on Sunday evening.

News of the kidnappings comes a day after Nigerian authorities announced the release of 130 students and teachers from a mass kidnapping at a Catholic school.

Police have not released any statement regarding the identity of the perpetrators behind the incident.

Kidnapping for monetary ransom by criminal gangs, known locally as bandits, has become common in parts of northern and central Nigeria.

Although handing over cash to release detainees is illegal, it is thought to solve many cases and is seen as a way for these gangs to raise money.

Insecurity in Nigeria gained new international attention in November after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to send troops there. He claimed that Christians were being targeted by gangs. Nigeria's federal government has acknowledged security problems but denied that Christians are being targeted.

On Monday, Information Minister Mohammed Idris said recent tensions with the US over insecurity and alleged persecution of Christians had been resolved, resulting in stronger relations with Washington.

He added that trained and equipped forest guards will be deployed to secure forests and other remote areas used as hideouts by criminal groups to complement the army's operations. /CNA
