A liquefied gas tanker explodes on a highway in Italy

A liquefied gas tanker has reportedly exploded on a motorway in Italy after colliding with a truck. The incident took place on the A1 Milan-Naples motorway.

According to authorities, firefighters and traffic police arrived at the scene shortly before the explosion and immediately evacuated the restaurant.

The explosion also caused damage to the road surface and infrastructure of the highway, forcing the temporary closure of a section in both directions. Traffic was diverted, causing significant delays. The shock wave also shattered the windows of nearby shops.

As reported by foreign media, the area was evacuated in time thanks to the intervention of three off-duty firefighters returning from Palermo.

Upon seeing the flames, they alerted their colleagues at the Caserta fire station and evacuated the area, including two rest areas. This heroic act likely saved lives and prevented worse consequences: fortunately, no injuries were reported. The highway remained closed to traffic in both directions for hours, from Caianello to Capua. /CNA
