Tensions rise/ Thailand bombs border area with Cambodia

Thailand has carried out air strikes in a border area with Cambodia as officials from both sides continue talks to end the fighting. The Thai Air Force said it had struck a fortified Cambodian military position after civilians had fled the area.

Cambodia's Defense Ministry accused Thailand of indiscriminate attacks on civilian homes and injuring several people.

Fighting flared up again earlier this month after a fragile ceasefire in July ended five days of fierce border clashes. At least 41 people have been killed and almost a million others displaced since hostilities resumed.

Both countries have blamed each other for breaking the ceasefire. Since then, fighting has spread to almost every province along the 800-kilometer border.

Cambodia's defense ministry said Friday's attacks took place in the northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey. Up to 40 bombs were dropped by F-16 fighter jets, the ministry said in a statement. Thailand said the operation was aimed at controlling the village of Nong Chan and was carried out efficiently and successfully.

This came as Thai and Cambodian negotiators held a third day of talks at a border checkpoint. Defense ministers from both sides will join the discussions on Saturday.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Friday that once both sides agree to each other's terms, a ceasefire agreement could be signed.

"I hope this is the last time we will have to sign, so that peace can happen in the area and people can return to their homes," he said.

The US and China have also tried to broker a new ceasefire. The dispute between Thailand and Cambodia dates back more than a century and has seen sporadic clashes, with soldiers and civilians killed on both sides over the years.

But in May, tensions escalated after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a clash. And on July 24, the situation escalated dramatically after a Cambodian rocket attack on Thailand, which was followed by Thai airstrikes. This triggered five days of fierce fighting, which left dozens of soldiers and civilians dead. /CNA
