Torrential rains in California cause flooding and landslides / Three people die

Torrential rains have caused flooding and landslides in many parts of California. Three people have died so far as a result.

The storms, which are expected to continue through today, brought 27 cm of rain to parts of Los Angeles County, prompting evacuations and closing major roads.

Emergency crews have been carrying out several rescue operations, including extricating people trapped in vehicles as floodwaters rise. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday in Los Angeles and other Southern California counties.

About 100,000 people in the state were without power as of Thursday evening. Evacuation warnings were also in effect for some residents of San Bernardino County in Southern California. 

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has also declared a state of emergency due to the storms and warned residents to be careful on the roads during the busy holiday travel season.

"I urge all Los Angeles residents to stay safe and exercise extreme caution on the roads if they must travel ," she said in a statement. /CNA
