Israel becomes first country to recognize independent Somaliland

Israel today became the first country to recognize the Republic of Somaliland as an independent state, more than three decades after the African region split from Somalia, with the Muslim nation saying it aspired to join the Abraham Accords.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar signed the declaration for Israel, while Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi signed for his country, which is located in a key strategic region in the Horn of Africa.

While no other country has officially recognized it, several states, including the United Kingdom, Ethiopia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Kenya and Taiwan, maintain liaison offices, and the Trump administration has sent signals in recent months that it may change its stance toward the breakaway region.

However, this action caused anger among some regional powers which accused Israel of undermining Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. /CNA
