US envoy meets President Putin/ Talks last about 4 hours in Moscow

US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg, while Donald Trump urged the Russian president to continue a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The Kremlin said the meeting lasted more than four hours and focused on aspects of a Ukrainian solution. The meeting, Witkoff's third with Putin this year, was described by special envoy Kirill Dmitriev as productive.

US President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment with the progress of the talks. On Friday, he wrote that Russia must move. Before many people die, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war.

This comes after Trump's envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, denied suggesting the country could be divided.

Putin appeared on state television greeting Mr Witkoff at the city's presidential library at the start of recent discussions about seeking a peace deal in Ukraine.

Ahead of the meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed expectations for a breakthrough and told state media that the visit would not be significant.

Dialogue between the US and Russia, aimed at agreeing to a ceasefire ahead of a possible peace deal to end the war, has recently appeared to have stalled due to disagreements over the conditions for a full pause. /CNA
