US-Iran meeting ends/ Talks for a fair agreement on the nuclear program

The United States and Iran have concluded a first round of talks in Oman over Tehran's nuclear program. This is the highest-level meeting between the two countries since 2018.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Iranian state television ahead of the talks that his country wanted a fair deal.

President Donald Trump withdrew the US from a previous nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers in 2018 and has long said he would make a better deal.

The talks are seen as an important first step in determining whether an agreement can be reached.

The talks lasted two and a half hours and both sides agreed to resume them next week, Araghchi said.

He said the next round may not happen in Oman, but will still be mediated by the nation.

"Neither we nor the other side want fruitless negotiations, discussions for the sake of discussions, a waste of time or talks that drag on forever," Araghchi told Iranian state television.

He said the talks were held in a friendly atmosphere conducive to connecting views and ultimately achieving regional and global peace, security and stability./CNA
