New arms supplies to Ukraine from Germany

Acting Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) announced another package of arms supplies to Ukraine from Germany at a meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group in Brussels (11.04.). There is no evidence of any decrease in fighting, Pistorius said. It is therefore absolutely clear that a militarily strong and supported Ukraine is needed. Only then will the path to a peaceful solution be opened.

According to media reports, Germany will deliver four more "IRIS-T" weapon systems and 300 missiles, as well as 100 ground surveillance radars to Ukraine this year. Supplies of reconnaissance drones, Marder infantry fighting vehicles, artillery systems, etc. are expected.

Problems with German weapons in Ukraine?
After the SPD and the Union agreed on a coalition deal, Pistorius spoke of a massive strengthening of the Bundeswehr. "We are at the beginning of a new era and we will have to prove ourselves in the coming years," he said. "It depends on whether we can become capable of prevention and protection - and do this in unity and in a short time."

Pistorius also expressed surprise at reports of problems with German weapons in Ukraine. "I read the reports with surprise," he said on the sidelines of the meeting in Brussels. He added that he was in regular contact with Ukrainian partners and "I have not received any reports like this or complaints about our materials." NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung had reported, citing an internal Bundeswehr document, that the Ukrainian army was having major problems with German military equipment./ DW
