Trade tariffs on China/ Trump: We could increase them by 50%

Trump is touting an idea to raise tariffs on China by an additional 50% if Beijing does not drop its retaliatory duties on American imports.

Trump in a post on Truth Social gave China until Tuesday to roll back its 34% tariffs, imposed in response to reciprocal duties unveiled at the White House last week.

Trump also wrote that he would cancel all planned talks with China if they did not meet his demand.

"China's action came despite my warning that any country that retaliates against new U.S. tariffs will immediately face new and significantly higher tariffs on top of those originally imposed," Trump wrote.

Trump said he warned of the cessation of all talks.

"In addition, all talks with China regarding the meetings requested with us will be suspended! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!", said the American president.

On April 2, Trump announced so-called reciprocal tariffs on imports from about 90 countries, adding a global 10% tax applied to all products shipped to the U.S. Describing the announcement as "Liberation Day," the president said the new taxes were needed to erase trade imbalances between the U.S. and other European Union member countries./CNA
