"It's an economic revolution and we will win it"/ Trump appeals

US President Donald Trump urged Americans to stay strong and play a round of golf for the second day in a row as his basic 10% tariffs on imports from all US trading partners took effect.

Following the announcement of the massive tariffs on Wednesday, the US stock market plunged, with the Dow Jones industrial average losing 9.2%, the S&P 500 falling 10.5% and the Nasdaq falling 11.4%.

"This is an economic revolution and we will win it. It won't be easy, but the end result will be historic," Trump said on the Truth Social network.

The Trump administration imposed a minimum tariff of 10% on all imports coming into the country and higher reciprocal tariffs on the US's biggest trading partners, including China and the European Union. The base tariff went into effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, and the reciprocal tariffs will begin on April 9.

Escalating a global trade war, China responded to the tariffs on Friday by imposing reciprocal tariffs of 34% on all imports from the US.

"China has been hit much harder than the US. They, and many other nations, have treated us unsustainably badly. We have been the dumb and helpless 'whip post', but not anymore. We are bringing back jobs and businesses like never before," Trump said in his social media post./CNA
