NATO meeting in Brussels/ Rubio: US remains committed to alliance

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with NATO chief Mark Rutte in Brussels, where he told NATO allies that Washington remains committed to the alliance and expects them to spend much more on defense and security.

Rubio dismissed doubts about the US's commitment to the alliance.

"The United States is in NATO. The United States is as active in NATO as it has ever been," he told reporters.

Rubio also confirmed US President Donald Trump's pro-NATO stance.

"He's not against NATO. He's against a NATO that doesn't have the capabilities it needs to fulfill the obligations that the treaty imposes on every member state," Rubio said of Trump.

Trump has previously said the military alliance should spend 5% of gross domestic product on defense, a big increase from the current target of 2% and a level that no NATO country currently reaches./CNA
