Floods in Greece/ Emergency situation also in Crete

The wave of extreme weather that has swept across Greece has now reached Crete, with authorities issuing an alert through the emergency system today.

After devastating floods on several Cycladic islands, Crete has become the latest target of the storm, with intense weather phenomena expected to continue at least until the early hours of Wednesday.

According to the latest emergency bulletin from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), heavy rain and storms are expected to hit western and southern Crete from Tuesday evening (01/04/25) until Wednesday morning (02/04/25).

The situation escalated in Chania, Crete, where torrential rain and lightning began at 8am, turning roads into rivers within minutes. Local media confirmed that a driver was trapped in floodwaters, requiring the intervention of the Fire Service to free them. Several vehicles were stranded, causing widespread traffic chaos in the area.

As the storm continues to keep the situation under emergency in Greece, authorities are urging residents and visitors to Crete to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines until the situation calms down./CNA
