"It's a political decision"/ Marine Le Pen reacts after being

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen, in her first statement after the trial in which she was found guilty, has said that her ban from running for public office for five years is a "political decision" aimed at preventing her from running in the next presidential election.

"If this is not a political decision, I don't know what is. The decision marked a "fatal day for our democracy. There are millions of French people who trust me. For 30 years I have fought for you and for 30 years I have fought against injustice, so I will continue to fight," Le Pen said.

Speaking to French television channel TF1 in her first reaction to the decision, Le Pen said millions of French people are outraged by the decision.

The 56-year-old is a three-time presidential contender and has previously said that the next election in 2027 would be her last run for the top job.

The ban, which takes effect immediately, ends those hopes unless she successfully appeals before the campaign.

Calling the decision a violation of the rule of law, she said she would appeal it and asked for the court proceedings to take place before the 2027 campaign. She was also sentenced to four years in prison, with two years suspended and two to be served with an electronic tag. She is not expected to serve a single day in prison.

Le Pen, who also received a €100,000 fine, will appeal against her conviction, her lawyer Rodolphe Bosselut said./CNA
