Powerful earthquake in Myanmar / Death toll rises to 2,056

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Myanmar continues to rise. The country's ruling military junta announced that the death toll from Friday's 7.7-magnitude earthquake has risen to 2,056, with more than 3,900 injured and 270 people still missing.

The World Health Organization has appealed for $8 million in aid. A WHO spokesman said the country's hospitals were devastated and overwhelmed.

Thailand, Myanmar's neighboring country, which was also affected by the earthquake, has so far recorded 19 deaths.

The Thai Prime Minister said the situation has almost returned to normal, however search and rescue teams are still working under the rubble of the collapsed building in Bangkok./ CNA
