After court conviction, Marine Le Pen is banned from running for president in

The leader of the far-right in France, Marine Le Pen, convicted today of embezzlement, is now banned from running to be the next president of France.

Judges at the Paris criminal court found Le Pen and her party guilty of diverting millions of euros in European Union funds to finance activities related to their domestic agenda.

Le Pen was sentenced to two years in prison, with two more suspended, and given an immediate five-year ban on elections, crushing her ambitions to take power from Emmanuel Macron in 2027. Judges suggested that the two years of the sentence could be served under electronic monitoring.

Le Pen, who was a leading contender for the 2027 presidential election according to recent polls, had said the prosecution was seeking her "political death" by requesting a complete ban on elections during court hearings.

While a decision by the Court of Appeal before the 2027 election is not ruled out, if either side pursues a challenge to Monday's result, it is unlikely given the complexity of the case and the number of defendants.

The ruling opens a power vacuum within the French far-right, which Le Pen worked for years to bring into the mainstream of national politics. One possible successor is party chief Jordan Bardella, who polls conducted before the court's ruling suggested could be a viable option to run for president in 2027. /CNA
