Trial in France/ Marine LePen found guilty of embezzlement

A French court found Marine Le Pen guilty of embezzlement on Tuesday, but it was not immediately clear what her sentence might be and how it could affect the far-right leader's political future in France.

Le Pen and 24 other officials are accused of using money intended for European Union parliament aides to pay staff who worked for the party between 2004 and 2016, in violation of the 27-nation bloc's regulations. Le Pen and her co-defendants deny wrongdoing.

The biggest worry for Le Pen is that the court could declare her unfit to run for office, a decision that could take immediate effect even if she appeals. That could prevent her from running for president in 2027. She has described such a scenario as a political death.

The Constitutional Council ruled on Friday, in a separate case, that imposing the sentence immediately was constitutional./CNA
