Accused of embezzling EP funds/ Le Pen's fate is decided

The court will decide the future of far-right leader Marine Le Pen tomorrow. The verdict will be handed down tomorrow on charges that Le Pen and her party officials embezzled money from the European Parliament.

If convicted, Le Pen could be banned from running in the 2027 presidential election to succeed Emmanuel Macron.

Prosecutors have requested that Marine Le Pen be sentenced to prison, pay a fine of 300,000 euros and also be banned from holding public office for 5 years.

The far-right leader has accused prosecutors of seeking her "political death." Le Pen has said prosecutors are seeking to deprive French voters of the opportunity to vote for whomever they want.

Asked last week if she was worried about her political future, Le Pen said:

"I'm not thinking about it. Fear doesn't remove the danger, so I don't see any interest in guessing beforehand. I consider myself completely innocent of what I've been accused of, so if my guilt is declared, then I will use the law to defend my innocence again."/ CNA
