Putin calls for interim government in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested the creation of an interim government in Ukraine under the support of the UN.

Putin has declared that elections could be held later to hand over power to a "capable government" to begin peace talks.

The Russian president suggests that UN supervision will exist "to hold democratic elections in Ukraine, in order to bring in a competent government trusted by the people."

He also says that Russia will then hold talks on a peace treaty with that government and sign legitimate documents that will be recognized worldwide and will be reliable and sustainable.

Citing examples of UN involvement in East Timor, New Guinea and parts of the former Yugoslavia, Putin says such a practice exists.

He adds: "Technically, it is possible to discuss the possibility of introducing interim government in Ukraine under the auspices of the UN with the United States, with European countries, of course, with our partners and friends."/ CNA
