Osmani again demands lifting of measures against Kosovo in meeting with EU

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani has again asked the European Union (EU) to lift the "unfair" measures against Kosovo, during a meeting on Wednesday with ambassadors of European bloc countries in Pristina.

"I emphasized the urgency of removing unjust measures against Kosovo, which harm our citizens and violate the very principles of the EU," Osmani wrote on Facebook.

The EU imposed punitive measures against Kosovo in 2023 - following rising tensions in the north of the country - and continues to keep them in force on the grounds that Kosovo has not yet done enough to de-escalate the situation in the Serb-majority north.

A spokesman for the bloc told Radio Free Europe in February that “the EU’s temporary measures are reversible and the Council has already set conditions for their gradual lifting, which are linked to steps being taken by Kosovo to reduce tensions in the north.”

Osmani and other leaders of the country have repeatedly called for the lifting of the measures, as has recently been requested by the European Parliament.

Meanwhile, Osmani said that at Wednesday's meeting with the ambassadors of the bloc's countries, he also discussed the steps towards the constitution of new institutions resulting from the February 9 elections, as well as the dialogue process mediated by the EU.

Kosovo held parliamentary elections on February 9 and is expected to have new institutions in place soon, as the Central Election Commission (CEC) is expected to certify the election results on Thursday.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti's Vetëvendosje Movement came first, winning 42.30 percent of the vote, or 48 seats in the 120-member Parliament.

The Democratic Party of Kosovo ranked second with 20.95 percent, followed by the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) with 18.27 percent.

No party managed to win at least the 61 seats needed to form the new government alone.

Kurti has said he is waiting for the certification of the results before his party members sit down and look at the way forward./ REL
