Energy discussions/ Ukraine war meetings heading in the right direction

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that talks with the US delegation in Saudi Arabia were constructive and meaningful and focused on discussing the energy sector.

"We discussed key issues, especially the energy sector," Umerov said in a social media post.

Umerov led the Ukrainian delegation for the talks that were part of a diplomatic push by US President Donald Trump to end the three-year war with Russia.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff expressed earlier optimism ahead of high-level talks in Saudi Arabia to end the war in Ukraine and said he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to end the three-year conflict.

"I think he wants peace," Witkoff told Fox News.

A US delegation is continuing talks in Saudi Arabia with Ukrainian officials about a possible partial ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. US and Russian officials will hold talks in Riyadh.

"I think you're going to see in Saudi Arabia some real progress, especially as it affects a Black Sea ceasefire in shipping between the two countries. And from that, you're naturally going to gravitate to a full ceasefire," Witkoff said.

Putin agreed last week to temporarily halt attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities but refused to endorse a full 30-day ceasefire that Trump had hoped would be the first step toward a permanent peace deal. Ukraine accepted Trump's 30-day proposal. /CNA
