Released from hospital/Pope Francis returns to the Vatican

Pope Francis, after being discharged from the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, is reported to have returned to the Vatican.

The Pope was hospitalized on Friday, February 14, with a respiratory infection that developed into pneumonia and remained in the hospital until March 23. The Pope made a brief public appearance on the hospital balcony, appearing frail and speaking quietly.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of Pope Francis' medical team at the Gemelli Hospital, told reporters that during Francis' hospitalization, which lasted 38 days, there were two very critical episodes in which the Holy Father's life was in danger.

The Pope will now recover at his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta, for at least two months.

“Convalescence is by definition a phase of healing, so it is clear that in the recovery period, he will not be able to carry out his daily activity of meeting people, as he was accustomed to,” said Dr. Luigi Carbone, his Vatican-based physician.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Rome in early April, where they hope to have an audience with Pope Francis, but it is unclear whether he will be healthy enough to receive any visitors.

"During this long period of hospitalization, I have had the opportunity to experience the patience of God, which I see reflected also in the tireless care of doctors and health workers, as well as in the care and hopes of the relatives of the sick," the Pope said. /CNA
