Trump: Only I can stop the war in Ukraine and President Putin

US President Donald Trump declared that he is the only person in the world capable of ending the war in Ukraine, adding that efforts to keep the conflict from escalating are somewhat under control.

"I don't think there's anyone in the world who's going to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin, except me. And I think I'll be able to stop him," Trump said in an interview with Outkick on Air Force One.

Trump said there have been rational discussions, with the hope that the war will end.

"We've had some very rational discussions and I just want to see that people don't get killed," Trump said.

The comments came hours after Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff praised Putin as a great leader and not a bad guy.

Last week, Trump held separate talks with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that resulted in the Russian leader agreeing to halt attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure for 30 days. Despite the agreement, Moscow's attacks on Ukraine have continued in recent days. /CNA
