US says it is monitoring the actions of Syria's new rulers

The administration of US President Donald Trump is monitoring the actions of Syria's interim leaders as Washington determines its future policy.

This was stated on March 21 by the US State Department spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, implying that no quick easing of sanctions on Damascus is expected.

"We are generally monitoring the actions of the Syrian interim authorities, on a range of issues, as we decide and think about the future of American policy on Syria," she said during a press conference.

"We continue to call for an inclusive, civilian-led government that would ensure that national institutions were effective, accountable and representative," Bruce said.

Her statements offer insight into what the Trump administration is thinking regarding Syria policy, as the US administration has been generally silent on the issue since Trump took office on January 20.

The main issue for Washington is whether it is open to lifting US sanctions on Syria and how it sees the future of US troops in northwest Syria.

Many Western countries imposed a series of sanctions on Syria during the rule of Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted from power last year by rebel groups led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which had previously been affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

When asked if the US is considering easing sanctions on Syria, Bruce said:

"The dynamics have not changed and no plans have changed so far."

HTS figures have already taken power in Syria. The group continues to be considered a terrorist entity by the US, while HTS leader Ahmed Sharaa currently holds the post of interim president of Syria.

HTS officially disbanded in January, as sanctions continue to pose a major obstacle for Sharaan.

The United Nations has said that nine out of ten Syrians live in poverty, in the country that has suffered great destruction as a result of the civil war that broke out in 2011./ REL
