Violated Europe's digital regulation/ EU Commission warns

The EU Commission has resisted pressure to protect US tech giants after finding that Google and iPhone owners are violating the Digital Single Market Act.

A year after launching an investigation, the Commission has concluded that the Alphabet network's failure to allow developers to direct consumers outside its app stores to other offerings means it is not compliant with the Digital Market Act (DMA).

According to the Commission, the American giant does not allow any form of communication between developers and consumers and makes consumers leave the 'Alphabet' environment with a warning message.

In a separate investigation, the EU executive found that Google was favoring its own services such as shopping, hotels and travel, giving priority to its own offers in search results over third-party services, which is prohibited by the DMA.

If Alphabet does not comply with the Commission's findings by offering a compliance solution, it risks a fine of up to 10% of its annual global turnover.

In a separate decision on Wednesday, the Commission gave Apple two years to enable devices from other brands to work with its iPhones to comply with the DMA. /CNA
