Protests in Serbia/ Suspicions that sound weapons were used

Calls are growing in Serbia for an investigation into allegations that security forces used a banned sonic weapon on crowds at a large peaceful anti-corruption rally on March 15.

Serbian rights groups and opposition officials allege that such a weapon, which emits a targeted beam to temporarily incapacitate people, was used in Saturday's protest, even though it is banned in Serbia. They said they will file charges in international and domestic courts against those who ordered the attack.

Meanwhile, Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? denied last night that his police forces used a banned sound weapon to disperse protesters in Belgrade.

"It's a dirty lie. I had the opportunity to see this weapon abroad and it makes a loud, piercing sound. That sound was not heard on the streets of Belgrade on Saturday night," Vu?i? said.

Suspicions and accusations

During a fifteen-minute memorial silence, eyewitnesses reported hearing a sudden piercing noise, causing the crowd to disperse in panic.

Speaking to local media, military analyst Aleksandar Radic said the sound must have originated from a long-range acoustic device (LRAD), commonly known as a sonic weapon.

The use of such a weapon is illegal, according to Serbian police law. /CNA
