New law approved/Germany votes for historic increase in defense spending

German lawmakers voted today to allow a huge increase in defense and infrastructure spending, a historic change for the country that could reshape European defense.

A two-thirds majority of Bundestag parliamentarians, required for the change, approved this Tuesday's vote.

The law would exempt defense and security spending from Germany's strict debt rules and create an infrastructure fund of 500 billion euros, or $547 billion.

The vote passed in parliament with 513 votes in favor, above the 489 votes needed.

The crucial vote in the Bundestag followed weeks of debate as Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and potential coalition partners the Social Democrats (SPD) unveiled plans to free up hundreds of billions in spending through relief on Germany's constitutionally guaranteed debt.

This vote is a historic move for Germany and could be hugely significant for Europe, as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine continues and as US President Donald Trump signaled an uncertain commitment to NATO and Europe's defense./CNA
