Massive flooding in southern Spain/ 19 rivers at risk of overflowing their banks

Flooding caused by heavy rains in southern Spain prompted officials to evacuate more than 350 homes on Tuesday and close the region's main roads.

Regional officials ordered the evacuation of 365 homes in the village of Campanillas near the city of Malaga after a nearby river burst its banks. Evacuees spent the night in a municipal sports hall.

Andalusia's Interior Minister Antonio Sanz said 19 rivers in Andalusia were on the verge of bursting their banks as bad weather spread from Malaga on the southern coast to landlocked areas near Seville and Cordoba. A total of 40 motorways across Andalusia, as well as several railway lines, had to be closed due to rising waters.

The same area in Malaga was hit in November when heavy rains across much of Spain led to devastating flooding in the east of the country, claiming 233 lives mainly in Valencia.

Spain, which has suffered from a prolonged drought in recent years, has received continuous rainfall especially in its south over the past two weeks and the latest storm proved too much for reservoirs and river banks.

Researchers and government officials link these fluctuations between extreme dry and wet periods to climate change, which has also made summer seasons increasingly hot in Spain. /CNA
