Imamoglu's imprisonment/ Fierce protests in Turkey

Thousands of protesters have taken part in demonstrations across Turkey after Ekrem Imamoglu was officially arrested on corruption charges.

Istanbul Mayor Imamoglu was expected to be elected on Sunday as the Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate for the 2028 presidential election.

Imamoglu said the charges against him were politically motivated. "I will never bow down," he wrote on X before being released from custody.

Following his arrest, riots escalated on Sunday evening, with protesters being shot with rubber bullets and tear gas.

Turkish President Erdogan condemned the unrest and accused the CHP of trying to "disturb" the peace.

Crowds gathered in front of Istanbul City Hall for the fifth consecutive day, waving Turkish flags and cheering.

Imamoglu's wife, Dilek Kaya Imamoglu, addressed large crowds outside the city hall, telling demonstrators that the "injustice" her husband has faced "has struck a chord with every conscience."

Mayor Imamoglu was among more than 100 people, including politicians, journalists and businessmen, arrested on Wednesday. He was formally arrested on Sunday and charged with "establishing and leading a criminal organization, bribery, extortion, illegal recording of personal data and tender manipulation."

AFP and local media reported that he had been taken to a prison in Silivri.

Imamoglu has also been suspended from his post as mayor, Turkey's Interior Ministry said in a statement./ CNA
