US to deport 530,000 immigrants/Trump suspends Biden administration's CHNV

The administration of US President Donald Trump has announced that it will revoke the temporary legal status of more than half a million immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

These immigrants have been told they must leave the country before their permits and protection from deportation are revoked on April 24. These 530,000 immigrants were admitted to the U.S. under a Joe Biden-era sponsorship process known as CHNV, which was intended to open up legal pathways for immigration. Trump suspended the program as soon as he took office.

A judge in the immigration deportation case criticized government lawyers for “disrespectful” behavior. The program allowed immigrants and their immediate family members to come to the U.S. if they had American sponsors and stay for two years on a temporary immigration status known as “parole.”

The Biden administration argued that CHNV would help reduce illegal crossings at the US southern border and allow for better control of those entering the country.

The Department of Homeland Security on Friday criticized the previous administration, saying the program had failed in its goals.

However, the 35-page notice in the Federal Register said that some of those in the US under CHNV may be allowed to stay based on a "case-by-case assessment."

Trump is also considering revoking the temporary legal status of about 240,000 Ukrainians who fled to the US during the conflict with Russia.

CHNV helped about 213,000 Haitians enter the U.S. due to deteriorating conditions in their country of origin. More than 120,700 Venezuelans, 110,900 Cubans and over 93,000 Nicaraguans were also admitted to the U.S. under the program before Trump closed it./ CNA
