World Bank: War with Iran is slowing global economy, growth at weakest level

The global economy is expected to face its biggest slowdown since the Covid-19 pandemic, as a result of the ongoing war with Iran and the uncertainties it is creating in international markets. This is the latest warning from the World Bank in a report published on Thursday.

According to the report, global economic growth is forecast to reach 2.5 percent this year, marking a decline compared to the 2.9 percent level recorded in 2025.

The World Bank emphasizes that further escalation of the conflict or prolonged disruptions in supply chains could cause further increases in commodity prices, increased inflationary pressures, food insecurity, and financial difficulties in many countries around the world.

The international institution warns that if power supply disruptions prove more severe than expected and are accompanied by significant financial strains, global economic growth could fall by up to 1.3 percent in 2026.

Meanwhile, the prices of oil, natural gas and chemical fertilizers have increased significantly, while maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz continues to face blockages that are affecting international trade.

The report also highlights that emerging economies will be among the hardest hit by the crisis. Their economic growth is expected to be lower compared to 2025, while per capita income in most of these countries, with the exception of China and India, is not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels until after 2028.

According to the World Bank, future developments in the conflict will be crucial for the global economic outlook and the stability of international markets./ CNA
