FBI seizes websites suspected of recruiting spies on behalf of China

US authorities have seized a series of websites allegedly used by agents linked to China to recruit former and current US officials with access to sensitive information.

According to an FBI statement, the websites posed as consulting companies and advertised remote jobs, including positions as defense analysts, international affairs analysts and consultants for former military personnel. Their purpose, according to investigators, was to provide sensitive or potentially classified information in exchange for payments.

Investigations revealed that at least seven people were recruited through these platforms. Recruiters sought reports and analysis on topics such as US-China relations, Iran and the Israel-Palestine conflict, while attempting to obtain inside information.

The US Department of Justice said the people who ran the websites were based abroad and were suspected of acting, knowingly or unknowingly, in the interests of the Chinese government. However, the operators of the sites have denied any connection to a foreign government.

According to the FBI, the scheme used stolen identities, artificial intelligence-generated photos and videos, and large payments to gain the trust of its targets. The payments were made through cryptocurrencies and bank accounts outside the United States.

Investigators have not confirmed whether any classified information was transferred through the scheme. Meanwhile, the FBI warns that foreign actors are increasingly using online employment platforms to target former and current employees of US government institutions.

An unusual detail of the investigation was that one of the fraudulent sites contained fake testimonials from characters from the comic book film "Anchorman," including Ron Burgundy and Brick Tamland, which helped authorities identify elements of the scheme./ CNA
