Pakistan carries out airstrikes in Afghanistan/ Dozens of casualties reported on

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated again after airstrikes by Pakistan along the border between the two countries, ending months of relative calm in the region.

Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said 26 militants were killed in four targets hit during what he called a "calibrated" operation.

According to him, the attacks targeted hideouts and bases of terrorist groups near the border, including a training center and an ammunition depot.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Taliban government said Pakistani airstrikes in Kunar, Khost and Paktika provinces killed 13 civilians, most of them children. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said 11 children, a woman and an elderly man were among the dead, while 14 other women and children were wounded.

The attacks came a day after an attack on security forces near Peshawar killed at least six Pakistani officers. Islamabad has repeatedly accused Afghanistan of harboring militant groups that carry out attacks on Pakistani territory, charges the Taliban government denies.

Relations between the two countries remain tense despite a ceasefire reached in October last year. Afghan authorities insist that their territory is not used to threaten neighboring countries, while Pakistan says the security of its citizens remains its top priority and will continue to act against threats coming from across the border. /CNA
