Shooting attack in a settlement near Johannesburg/ 12 dead and several injured

At least 12 people have been killed and nine others injured after a mass shooting in a township near Johannesburg on Tuesday evening, South African police said.

The attack occurred in the Cleveland area, where a group of armed men entered the residence and opened fire on residents at several different points in the community.

According to police, more than ten suspects got out of a white Toyota Quantum near a gas station in the area. The perpetrators entered the residence through two different entrances and shot at residents in several locations before leaving in the same vehicle.

Multiple police forces and emergency teams arrived at the scene after receiving a report of an armed attack in progress at around 11:10 p.m. local time.

As a result of the attack, eight men and three women died at the scene, while another man later died in hospital from his injuries. At least nine injured people were transported to various hospitals in the area for medical treatment. So far, the motives for the attack remain unknown. Police have launched a large-scale operation to identify and arrest the perpetrators.

South Africa continues to face high levels of gun violence and ranks among the countries with the highest homicide rates in the world, with an average of about 60 deaths per day. Such attacks in informal settlements are often linked to conflicts between criminal groups, illegal activities or personal disputes.

The incident has brought the country's gun violence problem back into focus. Last year, a similar attack at a Johannesburg tavern left nine people dead.

According to data from local organizations, there are about three million legally registered firearms circulating in South Africa, while a similar number of weapons are thought to be illegally in the hands of citizens. /CNA
