Naval drone rescues US military helicopter crew near Strait of Hormuz

Two crew members of a US military helicopter that crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday were rescued by a US naval drone, US officials told CBS News, the BBC's media partner.

Officials added that this was the first such operation carried out by US forces.

US Central Command (Centcom) previously said the two "soldiers were safely rescued within approximately two hours and are in stable condition" after their AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed "off the coast of Oman while patrolling regional waters".

It was not immediately clear whether the plane had suffered a mechanical or other technical problem, or was brought down by Iranian fire. The incident is under investigation.

In its statement on Tuesday, Centcom said the two crew members had been rescued at 7:33 p.m. EDT (11:33 p.m. GMT) on Monday.

"The rescue efforts were led by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and the 82nd Airborne Division, with support from U.S. Air Force and Navy units, including Task Force 59 of the U.S. 5th Fleet," the statement added.

Military officials who spoke to CBS News said the pair were rescued by an unmanned surface drone operated by Task Force 59.

In 2024, Task Force 59 launched a new unit focused on "the operational deployment of unmanned systems coupled with manned operators to strengthen maritime security throughout the Middle East region."

It was not immediately clear what type of drone was used in the rescue operation, but a US official told ABC News it had a design similar to a speedboat.

US President Donald Trump earlier told reporters that the two crew members were "fine" and that a report on the incident would be released later./CNA, translated by BBC
