Chile seizes over 100 tons of drugs hidden in wooden cargo bound for

Chilean authorities have seized more than 100 tons of drugs hidden in wooden cargoes headed for Europe, in what the Chilean government described as the largest ever recorded crackdown on drug trafficking in the country.

According to an official statement, thanks to cooperation between the prosecution, the coast guard and customs, 1,080 tons of wood impregnated with various types of drugs were confiscated. Authorities described the operation as a "historic blow to organized crime."

The government said the quantity of drugs seized amounted to around 100 tons, mainly cocaine and ketamine. According to Chilean customs, if the shipment had reached its destination, the narcotic substances would have been recovered through advanced chemical processes that require specialized laboratories.

The value of the drug on the European market is estimated at $8.3 billion. However, authorities warn that figure could rise as checks on suspicious containers are not yet complete.

The operation took place in the ports of San Antonio, Valparaíso and Arica, where drug-contaminated cargoes were discovered and seized. /CNA
