Knife attack at New York train station injures 6 people

Six people were injured in a stabbing attack at New York's Penn Station yesterday evening, raising security concerns a day before the city hosts the NBA Finals, which will be attended by US President Donald Trump.

The attack comes amid heightened security measures around Madison Square Garden, which is located directly above the busy intercity rail station, where the New York Knicks will host the San Antonio Spurs for Games 3 and 4 on Monday and Wednesday.

The New York City Fire Department said it received a call around 7 p.m. reporting several people with stab wounds at West 33rd Street and 7th Avenue, an entrance to Penn Station.

One person suffered serious injuries, four others have minor injuries, according to the fire department. They were taken to Bellevue Hospital and none of the injuries are life-threatening, another law enforcement official said.

A sixth person was taken to another hospital, a fire department spokesman told US media, without disclosing the person's medical condition.

According to law enforcement officials, one person has been taken into custody as the suspected perpetrator of the serious incident. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also reacted to the incident through a statement.

"My heart goes out to all those who were injured, their loved ones, and all those who were shocked by this unacceptable violence. I wish each of the victims a full and speedy recovery. I am grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the emergency response teams who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect and provide emergency care ," Mamdani said. /CNA
