Powerful earthquake strikes southern Philippines

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region in the southern Philippines on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), causing panic in some parts of the archipelago as buildings collapsed and several casualties were reported.

According to the USGS, the depth of the earthquake was about 35 kilometers. According to the Civil Defense Office, there are several victims from the earthquake.

The country's seismology agency, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), said the earthquake struck off the coast of General Santos city in Sarangani province, the southernmost tip of Mindanao island.

Phivolcs has also issued a tsunami warning, urging people living in coastal areas to evacuate. Tsunami waves could reach 1 to 3 meters above the tide level in some parts of the Philippines, according to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System./ CNA
