Elections in Kosovo/ Turnout exceeds 8% by 11:00

Kosovo citizens are voting in new snap parliamentary elections on Sunday, the third in about 18 months, after no party was able to win a strong majority to pull the country out of political crisis.

Voting centers opened at 7:00 a.m. and are expected to close at 7:00 p.m., according to the Central Election Commission (CEC).

The Chairman of the CEC, Kreshnik Radoniqi, said in a press conference at 11:30 that the electoral process is being conducted regularly and without any incidents in the country's 38 municipalities.

"According to data reported by the municipal election commissions, voting so far is taking place under regular conditions and without problems that would jeopardize the smooth running of the electoral process," said Radoniqi.

According to official CEC data, by 11:00, 8.33 percent of the approximately 2 million eligible citizens had voted, which is approximately the same as the turnout recorded in the last December elections.

The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office announced that it has engaged over 100 state prosecutors and support staff from the prosecutorial system to monitor the elections.

More than 900 candidates from 17 political parties and three coalitions are vying for seats in the Kosovo Assembly, which has a total of 120 deputies.

Meanwhile, political leaders called for a high turnout in the elections and a peaceful and democratic process.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti of the Vetëvendosje Movement, who aims to retain power, said he hopes the country will no longer need to go to early elections, after casting his vote in Pristina./REL
