Starmer, Macron and Merz hold meeting with Zelensky/ Discuss support for Ukraine

As Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth year, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European partners to discuss continued support for Kiev.

The meeting was also attended by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron. The three leaders lead the informal E3 security alliance, which is one of the main sources of international support for Ukraine.

In a joint statement, they expressed their support for Zelenskyy's proposal for a direct dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the participation of the United States and European countries, with the aim of achieving a ceasefire.

"The leaders welcomed President Zelenskyy's call to end the war through diplomatic means, as set out in his letter to the Russian president," the statement said.

Last week, Zelenskyy sent an open letter to Putin, proposing a face-to-face meeting between the two leaders. However, the offer was rejected by the Kremlin.

Putin said he sees "no reason" to meet with Zelenskyy until a possible peace agreement has been reached first. The conflict in Ukraine remains one of the biggest security challenges in Europe, while diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire have yet to yield concrete results. /CNA
