Tensions return in the Middle East/ Iran and Israel exchange attacks

Iran and Israel have exchanged attacks, resuming fighting that had been halted since a ceasefire took effect on April 8.

Iran attacked Israel on Sunday, saying its strikes were in response to Israeli attacks on the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

Israel retaliated in the early hours of Monday, despite comments from Trump suggesting he would ask Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to do so. The Israeli military said it struck targets of the Iranian terrorist regime in western and central Iran.

Iranian media reported explosions in the capital Tehran, as well as in Tabriz and Isfahan. Iranian state television, meanwhile, reported that explosions were heard across the country.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement that Israel used air-launched ballistic missiles in its attack. According to Iranian and Israeli authorities, the Israeli missiles hit a petrochemical plant in southwestern Iran.

An official from Iran's Khuzestan province said the Karun petrochemical plant near the city of Mahshahr had been hit and partially damaged, according to the state-run Fars news agency. The Israeli military said it hit several targets in the complex. /CNA
