Trump optimistic about deal with Iran: Strait of Hormuz could open within 2-3

US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with Iran that will prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

He stated that negotiations are in the final stages and that an agreement could be signed within two or three days.

During a statement to reporters after attending the National Basketball Association (NBA) finals, Trump said that tensions between Israel and Iran appear to be temporarily easing after recent mutual attacks.

He revealed that he had a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he described as very positive. According to Trump, after the exchange of attacks, both sides are expected to avoid escalating the conflict for at least a week.

The US president stressed that a diplomatic agreement would be more effective than military action. He stated that the US has the capacity to launch powerful strikes against Iran, but warned that such a scenario would bring huge human losses and negatively affect regional stability.

Trump added that, if the deal is signed, shipping in the Strait of Hormuz will be normalized immediately. He argued that economic pressure and sanctions have been more effective against Iran than military intervention, adding that the Iranian economy is facing significant difficulties.

In the end, Trump confirmed that the two crew members of a US Apache military helicopter, which crashed near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday evening, are safe and out of danger.

However, Trump's statements remain political assessments and there is still no official confirmation of a close agreement between the US and Iran. /CNA
