Bear appears in residential areas/ Japanese city takes measures, closes 94 schools

The city of Utsunomiya, about 100 kilometers north of Tokyo, closed all 94 schools on Monday after a bear was spotted in a residential area.

The latest footage circulating confirms that the bear was last seen today about half a kilometer from a high school.

Officials have urged residents to seek shelter in nearby buildings if they encounter the bear. They are also being advised to keep windows and doors tightly closed and avoid throwing away trash in the evening, which could attract the wild animal.

In its annual environmental report, the government described bears as a serious threat to public safety and peace. The report notes that bear attacks injured or killed 238 people in the country. /CNA
