Rubio calls Israeli Prime Minister/What was discussed with Netanyahu

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Secretary of State spoke with the Israeli Prime Minister to emphasize U.S. support for Israel. The Secretary discussed Israel's ongoing military operations in Gaza and efforts to help free the hostages and bring them home.

The secretary also conveyed the administration's determination to restore freedom of navigation in the Red Sea through military operations against the Iran-backed Houthis.

The Prime Minister and the US Secretary of State reportedly also spoke about regional developments, including the resumption of fighting in the Gaza Strip.

US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff sought to extend the ceasefire in Gaza through the Passover and Ramadan periods, during which time Hamas would release 11 live hostages and half the troops it still holds. Jerusalem approved Witkoff's proposed outline, Hamas did not.

Early on March 18, new, large-scale attacks began against Hamas terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip. The renewed Israeli military campaign has been officially named "Operation Strength and Sword."

Washington "fully supports" Israel's decision to resume its war against Hamas, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said. /CNA
