"You must fulfill EU reforms"/ Von der Leyen criticizes Serbia after

After months of intense protests in Serbia, the EU has finally broken its silence, offering a rare but measured rebuke to Belgrade.

"The country must fulfill EU reforms, in particular to take decisive steps towards media freedom, the fight against corruption and electoral reform," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote after a working dinner with Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i?.

The meeting, which was also attended by Council President António Costa, addressed the current political situation in Serbia and its path towards EU membership. It came at a critical moment for Vu?i?, who has been unable to quell blockades and student protests that have continued for more than four months. Demonstrators have been demanding accountability from Serbia's leadership for corruption and the erosion of democratic institutions during the president's term.

Meanwhile, the EU has been perceived as extremely cautious about supporting the protests, while Vu?i?'s working dinner with the bloc's top leaders sparked controversy inside and outside Serbia. Last week, 32 MEPs wrote a letter urging von der Leyen to cancel the meeting.

"It is important that the Commission engages with Vu?i?. But before giving him a platform to use at home for a surrealist show, the EU should clearly state that the Serbian protesters are demanding exactly the things that the EU allegedly wants from Serbia, but has failed to achieve," said Slovenian MEP Irena Joveva. /CNA
