Powerful earthquake in Myanmar/ Death toll expected to reach 10,000

According to experts, the death toll from the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar could reach up to 10,000.

So far, the number of victims has reached 1,700, while 3,400 are injured and 300 others remain missing.

The US Geological Survey estimated that financial losses could exceed the country's annual economic output.

The local government said Friday's earthquake was one of the strongest in the century.

Rescue teams have been heading to the area hardest hit by the earthquake, but have encountered difficulties due to damaged roads, collapsed bridges and the challenges of rescue in the midst of a civil war.

In many areas, search and rescue teams have not yet been able to reach them.

Myanmar's neighbor, Thailand, was also hit by the earthquake, with 18 people killed and 76 missing in the capital, Bangkok./ CNA
